Rebounding for beginners

Rebounding is exercise on a small, firm trampoline, usually called a rebounder in a studio. It is a low-impact, full-body workout that is gentle on the joints, and you can do it at home or in a class. If you are curious but have never bounced, start here.

What rebounding is

You bounce on a mat about a metre across, held by springs inside a steel frame. The mat gives with every step, so the movement stays low-impact while your whole body works. Some people bounce to music, some follow a class, and some keep it simple with a few quiet minutes a day.

It is the same machine South Africans often call a mini trampoline or exercise trampoline. "Rebounder" is simply the studio word for it.

Set up safely before you bounce

Place the frame on a flat, level floor with clear space around it. Check that the legs are fully open before you step on. An uneven floor or a half-open leg makes the frame rock, and a stable frame is the base of every safe session.

Footwear is your choice: bare feet, grip socks or a flat-soled trainer all work. Pick what feels stable and comfortable to you.

Your first sessions

Start short and easy. A few minutes of gentle bouncing is a full first session. Keep your bounces low, with both feet staying close to the mat, and let the rhythm settle before you add anything else.

Build up gradually from there. Short, regular sessions beat one long push in the first weeks, because the goal at the start is comfort and rhythm, not effort.

A little wobble in the first minutes is normal and settles with practice. If balance is a concern, keep the bounces low and stay close to the centre of the mat, where the surface is steadiest.

What to check before you buy

If you are shopping for your first rebounder or mini trampoline, check these before you pay.

Maximum user weight. The rating must cover everyone who will use it. The Jump Rebounding Premium Spring Rebounder is rated to 150 kg.

Frame. Powder-coated steel stays stable through regular use. This frame is mild steel, 25 x 25 x 1.2 mm, with legs that fold for storage.

Springs. A full ring of quality springs gives an even, responsive bounce. This model uses 36 high-strength chrome-plated springs.

Mat. Woven, UV-resistant polypropylene mesh stands up to daily use.

Parts support. Mats wear before frames do. A replacement mat for this model costs R649, and Jump Care™ covers selected replacement parts, compatibility guidance and local South African support.

One more question worth asking: if you want a bar to hold on to, check whether the model you are considering accepts a handlebar before you buy.

A studio that starts beginners from zero

Jump Rebounding is led by Mirna Bothma, a fitness instructor and studio owner in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, with more than two decades of teaching behind her. Her studio introduces complete beginners to rebounding on the same spring rebounders the store sells, one short session at a time. Here the equipment is the class machine first, sold to you with the same support the studio relies on.
